How Famous Artists Use Sketchbooks to Find Inspiration in Everyday Life

Creativity often begins with paying attention.

The world around us is full of subtle moments, colours, shapes, and textures that can spark inspiration — if we notice them.

Many famous artists, from Tim Burton to Frida Kahlo, have relied on sketchbooks to capture these everyday sparks and transform them into art.

Tim Burton: The Art of Observation

Tim Burton is known for his distinctive, whimsical worlds, but much of his creativity begins on the page. Burton’s sketchbooks are filled with simple sketches, quirky characters, and everyday observations that later become part of his films.

One fun thing I learned at a TIFF Theatre show on Tim Burton is that even before cell phone cameras were everywhere, he was always sketching people he saw out in public—sometimes even on napkins at restaurants—just to capture their faces and features. It’s a little glimpse into how he’s always collecting inspiration from the world around him, turning everyday moments into the quirky, unforgettable characters and worlds we know in his films.

His practice demonstrates that inspiration happens in unexpected moments, and how documenting and gathering your sparks of inspirations translates into creative work.

Frida Kahlo: Personal Stories in Sketches

Frida Kahlo’s sketchbooks often documented her personal life, emotions, and surroundings. From flowers in her garden to self-portraits exploring her feelings, her sketches allowed her to notice details in her environment and translate them into deeply expressive works of art. Kahlo’s work reminds us that the everyday can hold profound creative potential.

Other Artists and Everyday Inspiration

  • Leonardo da Vinci carried notebooks everywhere, sketching everything from birds in flight to mechanics in motion. His journals were experiments in seeing the world differently.

  • Georgia O’Keeffe often used sketchbooks to capture the essence of flowers, stones, and landscapes around her, which she later translated into her iconic paintings.

Turning Observation into Practice

These artists show us that inspiration  is  often found in the everyday moments, waiting for us to notice them. Sketchbooks act as a bridge between observation and creation, allowing ideas to develop into expressive artworks.

“Creativity begins with paying attention. Everyday life holds countless sparks — this is your invitation to notice them, be moved, and create from the heart.”
