Playing with Colour in Photo Transfers

Playing with Colour in Photo Transfers

One of the joys of working with colour photo transfers is how a simple shift in colour can completely change the mood of your artwork. In our latest project, we explored this by introducing a touch of colour theory and applying it directly to our transfers.

Analogous Colours as Inspiration

For this project, I chose colours that were analogous to the subject — hues sitting side by side on the colour wheel. For example, with flowers, I leaned into a palette of soft pinks, warm corals, and oranges. These gentle transitions create a harmonious, natural feeling that reflects the subject and helps the transfer feel cohesive and grounded.

Tip for Your Own Transfers: Look at your subject and ask: What colours are already present? Then, expand outward into the colour wheel to find those neighbours that will keep the mood gentle, unified, and flowing.

How Colour Shapes Atmosphere

Beyond harmony, colour has the power to shape mood. A cool blue or green overlay can bring calm and serenity, while warm tones like reds, oranges, and golds can energize and brighten the piece. When transferring images, consider whether you want to soften, energize, or deepen the emotion — and let colour lead the way.

Creative Experiment: Try transferring the same image twice, once using cool tones and once with warm tones. Notice how the mood shifts, even though the subject is the same. It’s a wonderful way to see colour theory in action and discover what resonates most with your creative voice.

In this way, colour becomes not just an accent, but a storytelling tool in your photo transfers — guiding atmosphere, emotion, and connection.

If this kind of project speaks to you,  I invite you to join us in the Authentic Muse Membership. Each month, we explore a new  creative practice.

Inside the membership, you’ll find step-by-step video instruction, a supportive creative community, monthly Q&As, and prompts to help you stay inspired—even when life feels full.
