Beyond the Artwork: “Peace”

Beyond the Artwork: “Peace”

When I look back on my time in Tanzania, one of the moments that always rises to the surface is the quiet, grounded presence of the matriarchal elephant herds. There’s something so calming about watching them move slowly, intentionally, as though they’re carrying centuries of wisdom in every step. They don’t rush. They don’t push. They simply are. And being near them, you can’t help but slow down too.

The two elephants in “Peace” were standing just off to the side of their herd. They weren’t doing anything dramatic no playful interactions or big gestures just sharing space in a way that felt deeply comforting.

When I began creating this piece back in the studio, I knew I wanted to hold onto that feeling of calm and stillness. Encaustic has this beautiful way of softening edges and holding light, and as I layered the wax, it felt like the medium was doing exactly what the moment itself had done inviting everything to settle.

This collection ended up being much smoother than my usual elephant pieces. The surfaces are softer, more serene. It felt right, almost as if the medium itself melted itself in such a way as to honour the peace I felt in that moment.

“Peace” is one of the few pieces left from this smalls collection I created, and every time I look at it, I’m reminded of that quiet morning, the grounded presence of the herd, and the sense of tranquility they carry so effortlessly.
