Nancy Falconi - The Elephant Matriarch - Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival 2023

Nancy Falconi - The Elephant Matriarch - Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival 2023

From May 1-31 as part of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival in Toronto I will be exhibiting a collection of images at Tav’s Gnocchi Pizza Bar - 589 College St, Toronto.

Nancy Falconi The elephant matriarchy photography of elephants

Tav’s Gnocchi Pizza Bar

This collection of photographs was taken in Tanzania, Africa and focuses on the interactions between various herds of elephants.  Elephant herds consist of mainly females, a matriarchal head of mothers, sisters, daughters, and their calves.  Females live in these tightly bonded family structures and stay together for life.  A herd can consist of anywhere from the to twenty five elephants.

The exhibition features the work of photographer Nancy Falconi, and the interactions she observed in the elephant herds.  The collection of images raises the question:  “What could we learn from the daily interactions of elephant communities?
