Mixed Media Trillium Forest: Colour Transfer & Watercolour Techniques

Mixed Media Trillium Forest: Colour Transfer & Watercolour Techniques

Watch the video here.

This layered mixed media trillium forest project begins with a colour photo transfer on a wood panel. This creates a textured, permanent foundation to work from. Over top, we’ll build atmosphere and depth using watercolor pencils and washes. By activating some areas while leaving others as dry marks, we preserve detail while also creating painterly softness.

You’ll also learn how to seal your work if you choose, and enhance your piece with a transparent acrylic glaze. These optional layers add light and atmosphere, allowing you to bring your own interpretation to the forest.

What I love about this project is the balance between structure and freedom: the photo provides a grounding base, while the watercolour pencils invite play. and expression. It’s an accessible process that works beautifully whether you’re new to mixed media or looking for ways to deepen your practice.

This project is now available inside the Creative Heart™ Membership, along with a growing library of other lessons. I’d love for you to join us — you’ll find the full video tutorial, materials list, and step-by-step guide inside the membership.
